Is the Co-operative Group putting profit before people?

Premier Foods, which has struggled with soaring costs and cut-throat competition, yesterday announced it had lost a £75million bread supply contract to supply the Coop with bread under the Coop’s own brand, after Premier was unable to agree a new deal on sufficiently attractive terms.

The biggest impact will be felt in Garretts Green, Birmingham, where 511 jobs are to be lost with the closure of a factory and distribution operation  . . .

As yet there has been no comment on the Co-operative News or Co-operative Group websites.

A shocked Midlands Co-operative member asks: “Will Allied Bakeries of West Bromwich be willing and able to re-employ these workers?”
