Co-operative democracy – 2: an experienced and committed member’s response to Peter Marks’ words

I find it very strange that Peter Marks should have said that Co-op democracy is sometimes a brake on progress for large retail societies (News, October 23rd).

Peter has been involved in the Movement for many years, so he is well aware that all societies are membership-based and that democracy is the key element of their success.

The Co-op Group is formed of hundreds of elected members who willingly give up their time to work on behalf of the society . . .

The Group continually reminds its members that they are part-owners and thus have a say in running the society, but often the say they do have is ignored . . .
