Susan Press reports, in the latest issue of The Co-operative News, that Mary Lockhart, Chair of the Scottish Co-operative Party is on a mission to make the Cc-operative Party more accountable to its membership.
She says that some NEC representatives have been more interested in reporting back to party members – and she wants to do the opposite, ”to make the NEC more interested in the membership and what it has to say”.
The NEC, she argues, should be ”a vehicle for getting what’s discussed by the members to be taken on board”
”Part of what has happened to the Party is that an organisation, which used to be run in an amateur, but friendly and passionate way has become more managerial and distanced from the membership.
“There has been an unintended erosion of democracy we need to address.”
Concerned co-operators see and deplore precisely this lack of democracy in the larger retail societies.
